Going There, Getting There, and Being There: Everything You Need to Know for a  Weekend Trip

Ian Cannon

Traveling within Europe as a student is an exciting opportunity to explore diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and iconic landmarks. With a bit of smart planning, even short weekend trips can become memorable adventures. Whether you’re visiting a new country or exploring a hidden gem within your host country, here are some tips to make your travel smooth and enjoyable.

What to Pack for a 2-4 Day Trip

When traveling for a few days, packing light is key. Aim for a carry-on bag or a small  backpack to avoid checked luggage fees, especially on budget airlines. Pack versatile clothing that can be layered, such as a jacket or sweater, and remember to check the weather beforehand. Include comfortable walking shoes, a compact toiletries kit, and essential electronics like a phone charger with a long cord, adapter and potable charger.  Roll your clothes to save space and bring a reusable water bottle. However, be sure to check the water quality of the area you are staying in. One thing that helped me keep track of everything was putting AirTags in all my backpacks and suitcases.

Finding Cheap Flights and Airlines

Europe is home to several budget airlines, such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, which offer affordable flights between major cities. To find the best deals, use tools like Google  Flights or Skyscanner. Google Flights allows you to set your departure city and search for  flights to “anywhere,” giving you a map of affordable destinations. Similarly, Skyscanner’s  “Explore Everywhere” option helps you compare flights across multiple locations, making  it easier to choose a destination within your budget. Both of these platforms allow you to  filter by takeoff times, number of connecting flights, price, and more. Be sure to read the fine print on budget airlines, as they often charge extra for services like seat selection and carry-on bags. Be sure that the bag you are bringing fits the dimensional requirements of the airline to avoid additional fees. Ryanair specifically will sometimes have boxes that your bag needs to fit into, otherwise they could charge you a substantial fee, sometimes  even more than the cost of your ticket.

Using Ride-Sharing Apps Efficiently

Ride-sharing apps such as Uber, Cabify, and Bolt are excellent alternatives to trains and buses for short trips or reaching less accessible areas. Always check the reviews of drivers and passengers for safety and reliability. These apps are convenient for getting around cities, but make sure to compare prices with local taxis or public transport options, as they can vary significantly depending on the city and time of day. Also, bear in mind that not every app will work in every city. There were times when I could not use a ride-sharing app and had to find the number for a local cab company. Another important detail is that tipping is not common in most countries. If you want to tip, simply round up to the nearest Euro (or whatever the local currency is).

Maximizing Your Travel Time

To make the most of your weekend trips, plan your itinerary ahead of time. Research popular attractions, local cuisine, and unique experiences to ensure you don’t miss out.  Book tickets for major attractions in advance to avoid long lines, and consider free walking tours to get a feel for the city’s history and culture. Use Apple Maps or Google Maps to navigate public transportation, and have a backup plan in case of unexpected delays. With a bit of preparation and flexibility, your adventures will become unforgettable highlights of your study abroad experience. Also, remember: things won’t always go according to plan  and that’s part of the fun. Sometimes, you just have to roll with it! Prepare when you can, improvise when you can’t, and try not to take yourself too seriously.
